Fans Disrespect Kaytranada at EDC Mexico

Grammy award-winning EDM DJ Kaytranada had a disappointing response from festival goers at EDC Mexico 2024.

Despite having a memorable 2023 performance at EDC Mexico 2023, fans did not seem excited to see Kaytranada at this year’s festival. Kaytranada even spoke into the mic at one point to ask why more people weren’t dancing. The odd energy lasted throughout the set before fans eventually started booing him.

The lineup for the festival included other big names like Skrillex, Knock2, and Zedd. From the roars in the crowd, it appeared that fans were upset that Skrillex was not yet on the stage. Kaytranada’s set was scheduled right before Skrillex.

According to recounts from fans who were there, some people in the crowd even went as far to type “Skrillex please” on their phone as they anxiously awaited his DJ set. Some people in the crowd even looked distracted and uninterested in Kaytranada’s set.

With Grammy award-winning hits and one of the most popular Boiler Room sets to date, speculation about what went wrong spread over social media. Some wondered if the organization was to blame for putting Kaytranada before Skrillex despite their vastly different sound.

Others argued that his place in the lineup between a dubstep and bass giant set him up for a restless crowd looking to hear a specific kind of sound. The response was still unusual considering that even much smaller unknown acts are not met with as much discontent when they are on the stage. This was also not the first time that Kaytranada has had a lackluster experience performing in Mexico.

While on tour with The Weeknd on the After Hours tour, Kaytranada opened for The Weeknd on his Mexico City stop to a crowd that did not seem to know his music. Kaytranada responded to some commenters on social media expressing his frustration with the lack of open mindedness from festival goers at EDC Mexico and not Mexico itself.

Hi! My name is Destine and I found a love for House and EDM through my time in the NYC dance community. My favorite thing about music is how it brings people together without having to say a word. Some of my favorite artists include Kaytranada, Kelela, Shygirl, and Uncle Waffles.
