Nala Slams Raver Who Hovered Over DJ Decks During Recent Set in Shocking Video

Nala, a Miami electronic music DJ, took to social media to give fans a glimpse of the dangerous interactions that can happen as a female DJ.

Nala is known for incorporating her own take on Riot Grrrlstyle vocals into her EDM and house DJ sets. Her one-of-a-kind performances caught the attention of Claude VonStroke, founder of DirtyBird Records. Since then, Nala has played at festivals big and small including Coachella, Electric Zoo, and Ultra

In her career, Nala has shown a commitment to women’s empowerment and representation in EDM. Nala launched her own label, Mi Domina, a femme-led underground and punk label in 2022. Nala has been vocal on X(formerly Twitter) about disrespectful behavior from men at some of her shows recently.

Whether it has been comments about her age or appearance, in her Twitter posts she grapples with how much to say and how much not to say. Even with protection from her friends, Nala expressed how a harmless situation quickly turned into a potentially dangerous one. Nala posted a video to her Twitter account of an uncomfortable interaction that happened to her during one of her sets that sparked a much-needed conversation.

In the video, a man tries to have a conversation with Nala during her DJ set. In the beginning, the interaction seemed friendly between Nala and the rave attendee. Eventually, Nala becomes visibly uncomfortable and puts on her headphones to avoid having to continue the conversation.

Even with her headphones on, the attendee does not seem to get the message and tries to carry on a conversation. They continue to lean over the DJ booth as she continues to play her set. Others around Nala have to intervene before the person leaves Nala alone.

In her posts, Nala discussed the aftermath of trying to leave the club and still encountering the person waiting for her after her set. It is one example of the many unfortunate experiences female-identifying DJs have to confront when they perform. Nala using her voice is one of the many examples of the ways we can step up for each other to be safe in the space.

Hi! My name is Destine and I found a love for House and EDM through my time in the NYC dance community. My favorite thing about music is how it brings people together without having to say a word. Some of my favorite artists include Kaytranada, Kelela, Shygirl, and Uncle Waffles.

What's your reaction?
