Techno Granted UNESCO Cultural Heritage Status in Berlin

Berlin’s musical culture continues to grow after announcing that Berlin Techno has been granted Unesco Heritage status in the city.

The techno scene in Berlin, which has extreme notoriety globally due to the endless amount of clubs, such as Berghain, and being a techno epicenter has grown even larger. Unesco has granted Techno to be cultural heritage in the city of Berlin, Germany.

UNESCO stands for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, a subset agency of the United Nations (UN). The main goal of UNESCO is to promote peace through collaboration in education, science, culture, and communication. UNESCO works to promote cultural diversity while protecting and advancing world heritage sites.

Berlin’s techno scene’s cultural acknowledgment comes after a group of DJs, artists, producers, festival organizers, ravers, and fans campaigned to gain cultural status for their city. Beginning the endeavor in 2021, by working together they secured the status of Berlin’s techno scene subduing the fears that the culture wouldn’t survive without it. In the last decade, roughly 100 clubs in Berlin have closed.

Berlin’s techno scene remains hardcore with Berghain as their top club and one of the most well-known club names in the global techno scene. The top floor features the Panorama bar, a club featuring more melodic techno and house music. Berlin is also home to Tresor, a techno club in the basement of an old department store in the money vault. Berlin’s techno scene shows no sign of slowing down, especially after UNESCO’s grant.

Rave the Planet wrote, “We did it! Congratulations to all the cultural creators who have shaped and contributed to Berlin’s techno culture. A big thank you to everyone involved who has been with us on this journey since Hans Cousto’s initial idea in 2011.” Berlin’s Club Commission wrote, “This is another milestone for Berlin techno producers, artists, club operators and event organizers,”

The legendary techno scene in Berlin has been solidified as an exceptional recognition of heritage. The UNESCO grant will also bring economic and societal growth to the city and grow the already robust nightlife scene.

Hey! I'm Shiv! Music is the greatest part of my life, I remember discovering dubstep when I was 15/16 and my entire life was altered - robot noises?? I needed MORE! Now, I live in NYC and have seen over 60 artists of all genres; my favorites being Odesza, Subtronics, Rezz, Griz, Zeds Dead, John Summit and Kaskade. I am an enjoyer of music and will try everything once, I do not discriminate - there is beauty in all genres (minus country). You can usually find me in a warehouse at 4AM because I am nocturnal and will quite literally never say no to a show.

What's your reaction?
