Who is Armin van Buuren’s Wife?

Armin van Buuren’s wife, Erika van Thiel, is the “light of his life.”

On September 18th, 2009, Dutch DJ and international superstar Armin van Buuren married Erika van Thiel after nine years of dating. Armin popped the question after DJing at the Royal Opera House in Sydney, Australia. Across the bay, a sailboat dropped a large banner that read, “Will you marry me,” and the rest was history. Armin and his wife share a son, Remy van Buuren, born in July of 2013, and a daughter, Fenna van Buuren, born in July of 2011. Armin announced to the world that his wife had given birth to their son Remy while performing at Tomorrowland in 2013. The couple was overjoyed to welcome their second son into the world, and last (at least for now) child.

Although Armin has lived an extremely public life, Erika has been more reserved in the public eye. Her private Instagram has less than 150 followers and only 61 posts, a stark contrast between her and her husband. For the most part, the world had been excluded from the couple’s private relationship, until Armin’s first documentary series, released via Youtube in six 20-minute increments. 

In the docu-series “Armin van Buuren is Mr. Perfect,” the narrative pays special attention to Erika and Armin’s connection. The duo met during the summer of 1999 on holiday, on a “party island” in the Mediterranean. Armin and his friends were hanging out at the pool when they noticed a beautiful girl sunbathing. Armin mumbled to his friends, “That’s her,” and promptly approached.

Erika had never heard of Armin before – Armin was at the point in his career where he hadn’t quite broken through yet, although it was merely the calm before the storm. Throughout the summer, the two grew close. When the summer ended, Erika was shocked to find Armin at her hometown airport. He had followed her home to meet her parents. He was serious about her. 

The narrative of the docu-series painted Erika as Armin’s rock, for both his career and personal life, his foundation and “guiding light.” Armin supposedly never said no to gigs and never took days off. Erika was the first person to put Armin’s health first, Armin included. Although it was difficult to witness Armin’s rise to fame, her bright disposition provided stability for Armin during the tumultuous ascent.

During one of the interview moments, Erika mused, “I never fell in love with DJ Armin. I fell in love with Armin. The side effect was that he was a DJ.” An international superstar and beloved by many, but most importantly, Erika.
