Mike Posner Reflects on Life in Honor of ‘I Took a Pill in Ibiza’ Ten Year Anniversary

Ten years later, Mike Posner has shared with fans how he’s changed his life for the better since writing his all-time smash hit.

After releasing his first bonafide hit, “Cooler Than Me,” in 2010, Mike Posner was thrust into a life of fame and partying for which he was ill-prepared. Four years later, on his twenty-sixth birthday, Posner wrote a song about his insecurities and self-destructive behavior in the wake of his new-found stardom and called it, “I Took a Pill in Ibiza.” The song – and particularly the Seeb remix that was played to death on the radio for years – propelled his career to new heights and earned him a 2016 Grammy nomination for song of the year, next to the likes of Beyonce, Justin Bieber, and Adele.

Now, on his thirty-sixth birthday, Posner has posted on Instagram detailing for fans the dramatic changes he has made in his life since writing his iconic track. Posner, who now promotes physical and mental health on his social media accounts and the Mike Posner Podcast, says that he is “proud to look at the song lyrics and know that NONE of them are true anymore.” He then goes in-depth on those lyrics to tell followers exactly how he has “grown into a completely new man.”

Of the title lyric, “I took a pill in Ibiza to show Avicii I was cool,” Posner says that he no longer does anything that “harms my body to try to get people to like me.” He now drives a “4runner” instead of a sports car and has donated the massive collection of shoes that he spent his millions on. Posner says that he no longer feels alone as he has “spent a decade creating a community of the most loving high powered friends in the world” and that he is “the happiest I have ever been in my life.”

The post concludes focusing on the famous line, “all I know are sad songs.” Posner says, “I know sadness and pain very well, [but] I also know how I overcame/overcome it… I also know redemption songs, songs of freedom, songs of faith, and songs of devotion.” He encourages fans to “keep going” if they are going through hard times because he serves as living proof that, with some effort, the hard times will give way to a better life.
