Exron Exclusive Interview: ADR

Anthony Roofe, better known as ADR, quickly made a name for himself with his addictive infusion of acid-inspired productions and dynamic performances. His talent didn’t go unnoticed, grabbing the attention of BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac early on in 2018. Annie featured his unreleased track ‘Acid Riot’ on her Friday night show, propelling ADR into the spotlight.

This was his breakthrough that led to his debut single released on Cr2 Records followed by tracks on labels like Electric Party People, Elrow, and VIVa Music. Fast forward, ADR released three EPs in 2023 including ‘No Place Like Ohm’, ‘Resistance is Useful’, and ‘Gloomy’ with another on the way to kick start the year.

ADR is expanding and pushing his musical horizons this year. In our exclusive interview we learn about ADR’s musical journey, style, and new projects coming up in 2024.

Exron Music: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for our readers?

I’m a UK based artist who specializes in acid infused house music. I come from the city of Peterborough which could be called the east midlands of England if you haven’t heard of it (or about an hour train north of London if you still aren’t sure). I’m currently 24 years old, and I’ve been producing for over 10 years now! Alongside being an artist I’m also a music production coach, educator and sound engineer!

Exron Music: What were your earliest memories of dance music growing up?

I grew up heavily around artists such as Kraftwerk, The Chemical Brothers and 808 state. Kraftwerk in particular, I can really look back and hear the influence they’ve had on my music even now.

Exron Music: We’re always fascinated by artists’ musical journeys. How did you get into making electronic music?

I was just naturally drawn into wanting to make music at around the age of 14. I skipped a day off school to download my first ever DAW and make my first ever track. It sounded awful and I got into trouble for not going to school but after that, I was addicted to music production. Fast forward a couple of years and I got into my first festival around the age of 16, again I was bending the rules to get in slightly. I saw artists like Sidney Charles, Jamie Jones, Richy Ahmed and Skream. I fell in love with raving and the ‘underground’ house scene and haven’t looked back since.

Exron Music: Hailing from the UK, how has the electronic scene there influenced your sound?

The UK is jam packed full of amazing talent and I’m very lucky to come from an area like this. From the top of the scene to the up and comers, there’s so many incredible artists across the country. Brands such as Fuse, You&Me, TRMNL and Eastenderz throw some of the best parties in the UK where you get to listen to some of the best music around. Venues such as ‘The Loft’ in Manchester houses some of the finest selectors in the UK.

Exron Music: In 2023 you made your mark with a handful of releases on some premier house labels – was there any particular track or release that stood out for you?

For me each release had a special feeling behind them. My release on East End Dubs’ label BELIEF, was my debut vinyl release, something I’ve always wanted to achieve. To release with Gene on Earth felt special too as he’s been a huge inspiration to me. Locus has also been a dream label of mine so again, I hold that one close as well. Certainly last year, ‘Black Box’ and ‘Bungee Gum’ were heavily featured in my sets though!

Exron Music: How would you describe your style and what drew you to produce your particular sound of house?

I’d say I lean towards the minimal side of house music  with a real acid tinge to it. I love making records that are full of synthy goodness but still have groove and energy. Once I got into using hardware in the studio, lots of doors opened for me and really developed the style of music that I made. I’ve always been someone who loves acid house but with a mixture of my old inspirations like kraftwerk alongside some new school labels such as limousine dream, it opened up a world of music which I love to make today.

Exron Music: We have seen your educational content on the Synthohub platform – what advice would you give to anyone who is just starting out or thinking of getting into music production?

Consistency, time, and patience is a key when learning production. Try to listen to and make as much music as you can. Don’t worry too much about the end goal and focus on small continuous improvement! When I teach people, I like to say that at one point, Mozart didn’t know how to play the piano! So whether you’re wanting to have a career, just make music or casually DJ, it’s something I encourage people to start.

Exron Music: How do you think house music will evolve over this year in mainstream music? What trends do you expect to see more of?

I think the garage sound is going to be prominent for a while. Also this more developed version of minimal too. I also think eventually we’re going to hit a wall with the bpm of house music and slow right down again. I sometimes miss the days of 123bpm.

Exron Music: Any new artists you’re digging or regularly playing their stuff?

A producer from argentina called Furz is a real standout for me. Great guy too. A big mention to Joehbli, Rupert Ellis, Liquid Earth and Mad Villa as artists I’m playing a lot at the moment.

Exron Music: When you’re not in the studio, what do you like to do to relax?

I like to look after myself with the gym, swimming and meditation to keep myself balanced and well. I’m also into a japanese skill toy called kendama which is super fun and addictive too. I do love to play games too but I’m not an online player. Only campaigns and solo business. I’m really into my fashion, clothes and streetwear etc so I do enjoy looking for new garms and clothes too. If you die that’s your ghost outfit forever so you’ve always got to look your best.

Exron Music: What can we expect from ADR in 2024 – any exclusives you can reveal?

I’m extremely excited for my next release which will be on Burnski’s label, Pilot. It’s a joint EP with myself and North Phase, the alias for Burnski and Rob James. It’s out on digital and vinyl at the end of January featuring a personal favourite track ‘Ned Flanders Hot Chocolate’. I’m super excited to get this one out and it was a huge honor to get the call up from Burnski. I’ll be shouting about some other exciting projects coming later this year!

An Atlanta gal chasing her love for electronic dance music. I’ve been with Exron since 2018 and have the privilege of contributing to the culture alongside other badass women whom I now call my friends. My introduction to the scene was first influenced by trap music, but my discography has since expanded to touch a bit of everything. Some of my favorite artists are Zeds Dead, Cloonee, Nghtmre, Flume, Infekt, Sosa, Bleu Clair, Subtronics, but the list goes on forever.
