Exron Exclusive Interview: A ON

With 2024 upon us, we wanted to take the time to reflect on the past year within electronic music. With countless striking releases around the globe, it was no doubt a year to remember. As we look to the best tracks dropped during 2023, the talented A ON is joining us to take us through his personal favorites, rounding up the sounds, messages, and influences that defined his 2023 in an exclusive interview.

Exron Music: Can you share with us your personal top tracks or releases from this year, and what makes each of them special to you?

Overmono – ‘Gunk’

I love the grooves and sound textures these brothers are able to put together. Also, I love the way they work the vocal hooks. This track definitely grabs you from the beginning!

DJ Heartstring – ‘Never Let Me Go’

Love the 90s and energetic vibe this track has. It brings me straight back to those days.

Blawan – ‘Body Ramen’

This track is so intricate. I love the dark vibe it brings, and the use of voice samples – it has a spooky vibe but is very fun at the same time.

Daniel Avery – ‘Going So Slow’

I like how Avery’s tracks are arranged, it’s not the usual way that Techno tracks tend to be. This track has some epic synth parts and a very cool UK 90s rave vibe.

George Clanton – ‘I Been Young’

This Vapour Wave Producer has made this vintage pop hit and it grabbed my attention the first time I heard it! Once again, another nostalgic track.

Sextile – ‘Crassy Mel’

I have been following Sextile since I saw them live in New York in the summer of 2022. This song is part of their last album which has a way more electronic style. This track is very energetic with acid sounds but still has that punk vibe.

Exron Music: Reflecting on the past year, which track, either by your own production or by another artist, do you feel has had the biggest impact on your career, and why?

I guess my track “Will 2 Be” since it was the first one I have made as A ON. Since I made this track, I knew I had to go this route on my future tracks.

Exron Music: Were there any unexpected or surprising moments related to the tracks on your list, whether they are your own or by other artists? Any unexpected fan reactions or collaborations that stood out?

A DJ friend of mine played one of my unreleased tracks “Take All Pretty” at a way slower BPM and it sounded great, and people were dancing to it. It was a great surprise.

Exron Music: Can you take us behind the scenes and describe the creative process or inspiration behind one of your personal releases that made it to your top list?

I guess my upcoming track “Span Attention”. I was trying to make a dirty and noisy bassline and was trying to go more on a “gabber” vibe but then I added spontaneous vocals, and it clicked so well. So, it ended up being a dark Techno 90s vibe song! I normally start with the idea of making “some noise” but then along the way, I start making it more figurative.

Exron Music: Can you share a track by another artist that you discovered this year and felt a deep connection to? What drew you to that particular piece of music?

Probably a track by Fred Again.. called “Clara”. It was released after I had come back from spending time in London and it brought back so many memories. The melodic side of this song is very emotional and in the music video he bikes around the city – it felt like I was there again.

Exron Music: Are there any particular musical influences or experiences from the year that you believe are reflected in your selection of top tracks, whether they are your own or by other artists?

I would definitely say I have been exploring different kinds of Techno and UK Garage in order to see what things I like from each different style and see what I could take with me into my own productions – I’ve been getting new inspirations for my sound.

Exron Music: Can you share any memorable anecdotes or stories related to the creation or performance of one of your personal releases or a track by another artist on your top list?

When I was creating my first track “Will 2 Be,” I was playing it super loud! And then my neighbour knocked on the door. I thought I was bothering him but he happened to be with a group of friends about to go out and they wanted to know whose track it was. I told them it’s on the way to becoming one!

Exron Music: Looking back on the year, do you notice any common themes or motifs that run through your top tracks, or were they intentionally diverse in style and sound?

I would say they all share a great catchy groove or great use of vocals.

Exron Music: How do you feel your music has evolved or changed over the past year, and do your top tracks, whether they are your own or by other artists, represent this evolution in any way?

Since this is a new project. It is an evolution in itself right now.

Exron Music: What message or emotions do you hope your audience takes away from your selection of top tracks, whether they are your own or by other artists, as they wrap up this year and move into the next?

With my own tracks, I always want the audience to get into a journey. The way I make music always has a story instead of a flat steady track. So, I hope I keep refining this element in order to get the audience to identify my songs with that characteristic. With A ON the emotions can be different from one song to another, even if they are all intended for dancing. They are also great to listen to on the highway!

We round up this interview by thanking A ON for his time and for sharing a look into what his musicality and creativity looked like throughout 2023. With an exciting journey ahead, we’re looking forward to following him along and hearing more from the talented Producer soon. So, an Artist not to be missed, make sure to stay up-to-date with A ON by following him across social media.
