Sustaining a career as a musician is hard enough, but adding parenthood into the mix does not make anything easier. In a recent Instagram post by Australian DJ Anna Lunoe, she sheds light on the trials and tribulations of her journey as a musician and mother.

Anna Lunoe was recently a keynote speaker at BigSound, the southern hemisphere’s biggest music industry gathering in Brisbane, Australia. At BigSound, she spoke on her 17-year career and the lessons she’s learned. Since the conference, Lunoe began reflecting on her first steps in motherhood six years ago.

Six years ago, Anna Lunoe was touring the world playing festivals while she was pregnant. A sight rarely seen amongst DJs then, Lunoe was still climbing the decks eight months into her pregnancy. Petrified of the reactions she would receive, Lunoe’s pregnancy became a unifier amongst her and her fans.

The unlikely unifier eventually created more dialogue around motherhood in dance music. Anna Lunoe is “happy seeing pregnancy more visible in dance music in 2023!” Even though this is what we see, Lunoe expresses that “parenthood is lots of invisible work.” As fans, we only know artists through the work they present, but their daily lives remain ambiguous.

For Anna Lunoe, adding motherhood into her life has been very challenging. On top of her career, she had to deal with pregnancy and raising her children. She states that “adding it in to a busy life means priorities are made fast.” Juggling her career as a musician and her life as a mother has been her biggest challenge yet, but she claims “it’s made me tougher, truer and better at everything.”

As a global sensation and a mother of two, Anna Lunoe understands the challenges behind being a touring musician with children. Despite these challenges, Lunoe still performs on international stages and demonstrates to her fans how she continuously shows up for her family daily.
