Brazilian DJs Chemical Surf & Zafrir Drop Tribal “Paranauê” – [Listen]
Brazilian DJ duo, composed of the Sanches brothers, teamed up with Israeli DJ Zafrir, to drop a tribal-infused track titled “Paranauê.” The track is a reimagined mix of Brazil’s traditional “Paranauê.” The origins of the song stem from Brazilian capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian art, born in the 16th century, that combines dance, music, and martial arts in a parkour-meets-The-Matrix showdown. All capoeiristas know “Paranauê,” for it is their fighter’s anthem, sung in the indigenous language tupi guarani.
The etymology behind the word “paranauê” lends itself to concept rather than definite meaning. “Paraná” translates to “like the sea,” and, taking it a step further, the expression “paranauê” references someone who has mastered capoeira – their flow is comparative to the push, pull, and power of the very seas that slap Brazil’s shores.
“This music is part of our culture… we listen to ‘Paranauê” since childhood,” muses Chemical Surf. “It made us very excited when Zafrir brought the idea of re-record this classic. We tried to do a different version of all others that already exist.“ Chemical Surf has performed at festivals such as Rock In Rio, Lollapalooza, Ultra Miami, EDC Las Vegas, and Beyond Wonderland. They recently released a collaboration with Kaskade, ‘Pow Pow Pow’, as well as the EP Teremoto on Martin Garrix’ STMPD RCRDS.
As for Zafrir, he’s worked with artists such as Armin Van Buuren and Alok, performing at venues all over the world, from Ibiza to his home state of Israel.
