Azealia Banks Slams Beyoncé and Jay-Z Over Cowboy Carter Album

Azealia Banks has taken to social media to share her unfavorable opinion of Beyoncé and her latest album ‘Cowboy Carter’.

In the music industry, it’s not unusual to have differing opinions, especially when it comes to highly anticipated releases from big names. However, Azealia Banks’ recent criticism of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s collaborative project, ‘Cowboy Carter’, has caused a stir in the music community. Known for her unfiltered commentary, Banks has taken to social media to voice her scathing review.

‘Cowboy Carter‘ is Beyoncé’s 8th studio album, released on March 29, 2024. It is part of her trilogy project, showcasing the contributions of Black pioneers to American music and culture. The album blends country, R&B, pop, hip hop, blues, soul, rock, and folk music. The album is presented as a radio broadcast by KNTRY Radio Texas, with Dolly Parton, Linda Martell, and Willie Nelson as disc jockeys.

This new release by the artist received widespread critical acclaim upon its release. Reviewers praised the album. They noted it as a genre experimentation, expansive scope, and eclectic references. But also, how it helped to reimagine Americana and country music through the lens of its Black roots. The album also sparked discussions about the place of Black musicians in country music, increased the listening audience for Black country artists and country radio in general, and popularized Western wear and culture. But for Azealia Banks, that was not the case.

Earlier this week, Azealia Banks took to her social media to express her opinion on the recently released album. In a series of Instagram stories, she said, “Wow, we didn’t even try to put even a little effort into a more artistic title referencing Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ album title.” She continued to accuse Beyoncé of doing “pick me” activities and stated, “You do lame stuff like bringing out other women at the Country Music Awards who would never do the same for you. You’re always sharing your platform with these women who are so jealous of you. But also, have such a long history of sabotaging other black women’s careers.”

Despite the controversy, fans continue to support her new album. However, Banks remains firm in her criticism, doubling her stance and encouraging fans to hold artists accountable for their actions. Certainly, the aftermath of Banks’ critical review highlights the complexity of artistic expression in a diverse society. Music has the potential to unite and motivate, but it can also stimulate emotional debate and question established norms. What are your thoughts on this controversy?

My name is Emilee Gabbard. I currently live in sunny Orange County, CA. By day I am a project manager working in the aerospace industry, but by night a music blogger for yours truly, Exron Music! I have been writing for Exron Music for around eight months now and cannot wait to see what is to come throughout the years. At festivals and clubs, you will find me at any house and techno stage supporting my favorites Eli Brown or Dom Dolla, or belting every word to Porter Robinson tracks wherever he performs.
