Dillon Francis Hints Upcoming Moombahton EP Release With Good Times Ahead

And just like that, the master of moombahton is back: Dillon Francis teases a new moombahton EP in collaboration with Good Times Ahead.

Picture this: The year is 2011. A little-known American DJ by the name of Dillon Francis catches the attention of EDM titan Diplo. The two collaborate on the track ‘Que Que,’ featuring Latin pop artist Maluca, which is released on Francis’ ‘Westside!’ EP. The track, along with ‘Masta Blasta,’ ‘Brazzer’s Theme,’ and the titular song itself revolutionize the new moombahton genre. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Flash forward to over ten years later, and Francis is one of the most popular American music producers in the game, boasting over three million Instagram followers, over six million monthly listeners on Spotify, and collaborations with some of the biggest names in the genre including ILLENIUM, Calvin Harris, Skrillex, Kygo, Martin Garrix, and DJ Snake–and that’s just the shortlist.

But like most successful artists, Francis hasn’t forgotten his roots. In fact, on May 5 the DJ responded to a user’s tweet hinting at an upcoming EP release in collaboration with Matthew Van Toth and Julio Mejia, otherwise known as electronic music duo Good Times Ahead. 

@bloodymermaidz tweeted, “If yellowclaw & floss taking it back for Hard in LA, what are the chances we get some moombah from @DillonFrancis,” to which Francis replied, “Actually @goodtimesahead and I have been working on a moombahton ep so ima play a bunch of sh*** from that.” Cue the party!

While Francis is most well-known for popularizing the moombahton genre, he’s experimented with many different forms of EDM. His 2015 debut album ‘Money Sucks, Friends Rule’ included everything from the EDM trap classic ‘Get Low’ featuring DJ Snake to the melodic bass-driven ‘When We Were Young’ featuring Sultan + Shepard and The Chain Gang of 1974.

2015 also saw the release of ‘This Mixtape is Fire.,’ an album that distinctly showcased Francis’ moombahton roots while also integrating other subgenres of electronic music. Francis returned to moombahton in 2018 with the Spanish-language studio album ‘WUT WUT’ before taking a step back from the genre for a few years.

Fans took to the comments of Twitter to express their excitement over the moombahton master’s return to the beat. One user showed support by writing, “If there was any DJ to bring that sound back, it’s y’all,” while another commented, “This is for the culture.”
