1001Tracklists Faces Backlash for Only Listing One Female Producer on 2023 Charts

1001Tracklists has revealed their Top 101 Producers 2023 charts and BLOND:ISH has recognized that she was the only female producer listed.

Recently, 1001Tracklists revealed their Top 101 Producers 2023 charts and it has revived a controversy within the EDM community. Known as the world’s leading tracklist and playlist database, 1001Tracklists revealed their Top 101 Producers 2023 charts, which includes only one female producer, BLOND:ISH. The list also featured everyone from David Guetta at #1 and John Summit at #14 to Dombresky at #66, and Kyle Watson at #95.

Prior to releasing the list on October 16, 1001Tracklists made it clear that the results were completely objective and unbiased. Based on the website’s data, the Top 101 Producers 2023 charts were calculated by how many DJs were supporting each producer’s music. Not only do these data-driven results strike up a conversation about men dominating the electronic music industry, but they also show that male DJs are supporting male producers exponentially more than female producers.

However, 1001Tracklists was quick to recognize this. On Instagram, they called out labels, radios, and agencies for failing to empower women and POC. Plus, they featured The Future of Dance subcategory, which spotlights artists who have made significant contributions to the community within the past year.

Under the Top 101 Producers 2023 announcement post, one person commented, “I am very glad to see you shared this about the underrepresentation of women because DAMN!” Another person responded, “Big ups to all the male DJs I know out there playing music made by women. And much love to you lot for making this statement.”

With BLOND:ISH being the single female recognized on the Top 101 Producers 2023 list, she made sure to draw attention to the lack of diversity. On Instagram, the Canadian producer acknowledged the list with a half-hearted thank you, a hint of sarcasm, and a series of memes. BLOND:ISH’s Instagram caption read, “Fun Fact: there are more top female producers than just one! but thank you 1001tracklists for putting me on the list 😉 p.s. it’s just a meme.”

It’s always unfortunate to be reminded of gender disparity within the electronic music industry. However, 1001Tracklists bringing this issue back to the forefront and implementing The Future of Dance initiative is a step towards bridging the gap.
