What is Wook Flu?

Discover the Reddit folklore as ancient as time, a common plague recognized among the electronic music minstrels as the infamous wook flu.

In ages long past, there was a magical realm steeped in enchantment and wonder where fairies, wook warlocks, and techno goblins would gather together to celebrate life by headbanging under the stars and fire. Once the celebration was over, festivalgoers would leave the mystical haven to return to their humble abode in the world beyond. Alas, they could not escape the unremitting grasp of the ultimate common plague that haunted their mystical existence. Through the word of the holy grapevine, two communication channels that we know as Twitter and Reddit, the modern-day ravers bestowed upon this haunting shadow a name befitting its wook resonance: the wook flu.

Also known as the “kommon kold”, the Reddit community of r/LostLandsMusicFest has come to comprehend that this all-too-common plague is brought to the body by dust inhalation, shared bacteria, malnutrition, and plain exhaustion after a consecutive streak of dancing. Common symptoms to follow up to two weeks are body aches, congestion, sniffles, sore throat, and extreme fatigue.

Wook flu conspiracists such as u/Myke190 would differ otherwise, stating they are “pretty sure [wook flu is] just the catch-all phrase for any strain your body feels post-being around thousands of people…”. While big dog Myke has a point, because dancing your fairy butt off may be exhausting, the wook flu stands as a badge of honor for those who survived and conquered music festivals such as the historic Electric Forest, WAKAAN Festival, and Lost Lands.

Warriors who have battled the strength of the wook flu stand on the other line of conquest with precautions and natural remedies such as hot soup with onions, warm honey lemon garlic tea, and multi-vitamins as knowledge to be passed on for ages. Resourceful tools such as hand sanitizer and saline spray have been discovered to battle the wook flu from contaminating festival warriors with hand bacteria and inhaled dust exposure.

As the wook flu continues to be studied amid the development of the 2020 coronavirus, the electronic music community solemnly holds the plagued experience with grace. Through the power of music, community, love (and lots of rest, and maybe a COVID test), there are thousands of precious moments for festival warriors to beam through the infectious wook flu with light and love.

Godspeed to all who have survived all strains of the work flu, from Ultra Music Festival, Tomorrowland, Electric Forest, Lost Lands, WAKAAN, and especially…any Tipper show.

Yoooo, the homies call me Marz. I am a multidimensional Piscean Latina fairy from Miami-Dade County (no, not Florida). Electronic music has allowed me to appreciate the profound beauty that can be found in finding peace within the chaos. Artists such as Rezz, Skrillex, John Summit, Michael Bibi, and Amtrac blend the two seamlessly, creating a harmonious balance that resonates with me whenever I am on the dancefloor. When I am writing about electronic music, I feel this same balance of peace and chaos moving through me - starting in my hips, filling my heart, and radiating out from my soul. The power of music has brought me to this exact moment, and I only desire that you feel the warmth of the sun through my words.
