Dance Music Mourns Avicii Five Years After His Tragic Passing

Life never prepares you for losing someone unexpectedly; this year marks the five-year anniversary of the departure of Avicii. 

The Electronic Dance Music community displays remembrance for beloved DJ Avicii following his death five years ago. Tim Bergling, better known as Avicii, led a promising career launching in 2008 with his EP, Sound of Now. At the young age of eight, he gained inspiration from his older brother, who was a DJ and began creating his mixes. Moreover, continuing his love affair with music as a teenager and then as a young adult.

Subsequentially, his quick music turnout recognized his genius, propelling him to climb the charts. An unfortunate turn of events led to his passing on Friday, April 20th, 2018.  The Tim Bergling Foundation commemorated the fifth anniversary with a touching Instagram post. “Today marks 5 years since Tim left us. 💙🤎We would like to express our gratitude for your heartfelt support,” began the caption. 

Although the loss of Tim was beyond devastating his memory lives on, on March 26th, 2019, his family announced the inception of The Tim Bergling Foundation. Additionally, the organization is to “honor his memory and continue to act in his spirit.” The founding members, Klas Bergling and Anki Lidén, Tim’s parents, wanted to continue his philanthropy work. Overall to advocate for suicide prevention and spread mental health awareness. 

Additionally, in 2012 Avicii’s House for Hunger Tour donated all the revenue from the tour to Feeding America. Consequently, he was able to raise over 1 million dollars as he performed in 26 cities across the United States. The month-long tour began on January 5th, 2012, in Detroit, Michigan, and ended 27 days later on January 31st, 2012, in Amherst, Massachusetts. 

Only a handful of celebrities or musicians utilize their platforms to give back to the less fortunate. From charity work to collaboration with numerous remarkable artists in his genre, Avicii was highly respected. On the day of his fifth anniversary, Diplo shared his grievances about the loss of his fellow musician and friend. His tweet read “Been 5 years .. miss you bro 💔.”

Without a doubt, Diplo summed up what the EDM community is feeling as a whole after losing such a remarkable individual. It’s hard to ignore the enormous impact Avicii had on not only music but the world at large. Fans, friends, and family have greatly missed him in the last five years. Always show up for your loved ones, and don’t take them for granted. We have a short go-around on this planet.
