A Deeper Look at Flume’s New Audiovisual Masterpiece ‘Palaces’

Flume debuts his third album ‘Palaces’ and shows he is still the experimental electronic music’s king.

Australian artist and producer Flume, also known as Harley Streten, has released his third studio album ‘Palaces’. The album is his latest installment in the artist’s signature sound. Flume has made a name for himself by occupying an electronic music sub-genre of his own creation. One that is left of center, experimental, ethereal, and uniquely him.

‘Palaces’, of course, is all of these things. However, we also see him step into newer realms as well. Especially with the song ‘Only Fans’ feat Virgen Maria which sees the artist venture into sex-positive Latin industrial music that also has hints of a queer club banger.

Others featured on the album include Oklou, MAY-A, KUČKA, LAUREL, Emma Louise, Caroline Polachek, and Damon Albarn. Making this a stacked roster of artists that, like Flume, occupy their own experiential genre.

The rollout for this album included five singles. The first being Say Nothing (feat. MAY-A), which took on an edgy pop audio-aesthetic. The song is emotional but MAY-A gives an ‘i’ve glown up’ attitude song that fits it perfectly.

The next single is with singer-songwriter Caroline Polacheck and is called Sirens. It’s much more angelic than the first song. Caroline Polacheck lends her ethereal vocal cords to the futuristic-sounding beat, which combines perfectly on the track.

ESCAPE (feat. KUČKA) and Palaces (feat. Damon Albarn) were released together as the next singles. And both fall under a similar emotional pop-like vein of the album.

And released right before the album was Hollow (feat. Emma Louise) which seems like a proper combination of the previous four singles, fitting perfectly beside them.

The album altogether sees flume experiment with new kinds of electronic music, like hyperpop, and bring more ethereal electronic music to his catalog.
